SPECIAL: BRITISH TALENT * ADAM BUXTON

Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the past fifteen years, you would have heard of Adam Buxton in some form or another. Whether this is because he was involved in the cult television series “The Adam and Joe Show” which he hosted with his childhood friend Joe Cornish which broadcasted on Channel 4 for four series, you’re bound to see a lot more of him in the near future.

The younger member of the much-loved comedy duo, Adam was born in June 1969. He met Joe Cornish whilst they were students at London’s Westminster School and the two kindred spirits soon found ways to satisfy their madcap personalities. Whether this included shooting comedy videos, he and Joe kept on persevering by broadening their filmmaking skills as much as possible such as working alongside their friend Louis Theroux. After believing that they had something which others could like, they sent in a tape of their capers to Channel 4 who were undoubtedly impressed.

Running from 1996 to 2001, “The Adam and Joe Show” remains one of the funniest shows on British television. With music videos made in tribute to Robert De Niro and short films which featured Star Wars toys appearing on “The Crystal Maze” (with Yoda as Richard O’Brien), this opportunity gave Adam a chance to showcase his comedic skills especially when in one sketch after he challenged Joe that he couldn’t organise a few drinks in a brewery.

Adam’s professional relationship with Joe did not end in 2001
because their pairing has seen them appearing in two separate radio stations. First up was on XFM and then on BBC 6 Music which, although sadly off air at the time of writing this, has gained a cult following with multiple catchphrases now accompanying the show such as “Stephen!” and quoting from an infamous scene in the Pierce Brosnan 1988 film “Taffin”.

As well as this, he has also been involved in other broadcasting work too. Buxton recently fronted his own radio show on 6 Music. Titled “Adam Buxton’s Big Mixtape”, it was a smash hit with guests such as Garth Jennings and Graham Lineham appearing. Although off the air at the moment, it is hoped that it will return soon.

It must be noted that when 6 Music was facing closure, Adam was actively involved in campaigning against this. With the announcement in June 2010 that 6 Music wasn’t going to be axed, he certainly played a huge part in this especially as he confronted BBC Director General Mark Thompson live on Channel 4 News regarding his decision to possibly close the popular radio station.

Outside of his pairing with close friend Joe Cornish, Adam is fast becoming a recognised name on the British comedy circuit. Whether it is through hosting such prolific shows as “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” to rapturous applause or appearing on “Have I Got News for You”, Adam has also been involved with “The I.T. Crowd”. He continues to write his own television comedy pilots but they’ve not been commissioned yet such as “MeeBOX” for BBC Three.

Adam can be seen in numerous films as well. “Hot Fuzz” and “Son of Rambow” are prime examples of such with Buxton also appearing in “Stardust” too.

And then there are many of Adam’s characters which appear in various other projects. Ken Korda was in “The Adam and Joe Show” and has also emerged in television shows which have been fronted by Charlie Brooker. Country Man has become a smash-hit on YouTube and each episode continues to be watched by many. It seems that every aspect of British society has seen Adam appearing especially as he is a performing musician too.

On the BBC 6 Music “Adam and Joe Show”, a regular slot featured which was titled “Song Wars”. With many entertaining songs appearing throughout this very popular slot such as composing a theme tune for “Quantum of Solace”, Adam continues to host his own “BUG” concerts. Happening every two months at the BFI in Southbank, the evening sees Adam showing music videos which he has shot as well as interviewing directors and personalities who Adam is fond of. Having personally seen the videos shot at “BUG”, there isn’t a dour face in the audience.

So, what does the future hold for Adam Buxton? With regular appearances on both television and film, Adam’s popularity shows no sign of diminishing. Whether his professional partnership with Joe Cornish will ever materialise again is yet to be seen but he’s doing very well by himself on all accounts.
