'One of  most successful comedy pairings of the past fifteen years, you’ll find it difficult to speak to someone aged between the ages 16-30 who hasn’t heard of Adam and Joe. Although Adam Buxton has had his own success away from Joe Cornish with his respected acting career and comedy BUGging concerts, Joe’s career is now developing at such a pace that he will not be a cult name for much longer.'_RUSSELL HILL

SPECIAL: BRITISH TALENT * JOE CORNISH

Born in December 1968, Joe Cornish’s life has gone from strength to strength. After meeting a young Adam Buxton when they were studying at London’s Westminster School, they soon started making funny little videos with their friends. Among who was the now-acclaimed documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux. Believing that he and Adam had something special going, they sent in a tape of their work to Channel 4 in the UK. Impressed, they were invited to be involved in fronting many projects which included “The Adam and Joe Show”.

On “The Adam and Joe Show”, there was something incredibly special about seeing this partnership on screen. With their madcap jokes which saw them using toys to create short parody films, this helped them to propel them to a larger audience. Their sequences of Star Wars figures being used in a “Crystal Maze” scenario along with their live-action “Guide to Life” instructional videos which were always fronted by a character who had no social skills, it was thanks to directing these short films which saw Joe developing his skills as a filmmaker. If you’ve never seen Adam and Joe’s spoof of “Titanic” (now Toytanic) and their version of “Snatch” then you’re in for a treat.

After the “Adam and Joe Show” ended on television, Joe returned to presenting television shows such as “This Week Only” on Channel 4 as well as the BBC Radio 4 show “Back Row” which saw him interviewing well-known figures such as Robin Williams.

But it has been radio which bought him back to the forefront of public opinion. Re-joining Adam on XFM in 2006, their show was a huge success. It was such a popular hit that they both landed a show on BBC 6 Music in 2007. The show has been a huge success and has spawned a cult following.

The sections which feature on the show (such as “Song Wars”) has helped Joe to develop his creative side. His proposal for “The Quantum of Solace” has long been regarded as a better version of the actual theme tune than the one composed by Alicia Keys and Jack White for the aforementioned film.

At the time of writing this, the show is on hiatus and is due to return soon. The reason behind why there is no 6 Music show at present is all down to good reasons though.

During the past few years, Joe has seen his film career sky rocketing. Although he made a few brief appearances in “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun of the Dead”, Joe directed the sleeper hit “Attack the Block” in 2011. Starring a group of teen boys whilst being accompanied by the ever lovable Nick Frost, Joe not only directed it but also wrote the screenplay too. And it is with the pen that his career is moving forward at breakneck speed. He has co-written the script for the upcoming smash-hit film “The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn” and this close association with Steven Spielberg (who has directed “Tintin”) seems to have boosted his credentials as a bona fide great writer.

Although it is due for release in 2014, Joe Cornish will re-unite with close friend Edgar Wright to pen the screenplay for the Marvel film “Ant-Man”. Although there is no cast announced at the moment, with Edgar Wright’s notoriety for directing profitable films expect a stellar cast. So, what does the future hold for this young Englishman? Continuing his career as a screenwriter seems a definite as does his status of being part of a double act which has kept people entertained for years. With his busy schedule, whether Joe will return to the 6 Music fold is unknown but with his career at an all-time high the outlook certainly looks bright for him.
