INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR IWAI SHUNJI
‘Love Letter’ (1995 – Alternative titles: ‘When I Close my Eyes’, ‘Letters of Love’), his leap from a successful TV career into full feature box-office hits, is already a classic of modern Japanese cinema.
‘Swallowtail Butterfly’ and ‘All about Lily Chou Chou’ hailed Iwai Shunji as one of the best representatives of his country’s seventh art both in and outside the Japanese borders and won the attention of US producers. ‘New York, I Love You’ (now in UK cinemas) found in Iwai the perfect director for the segment performed by Orlando Bloom and Christina Ricci.
'VAMPIRE' is his latest title, which he presented at the Sundance Film Festival.

If a screenplay writer or any kind of storyteller wants to captivate us for the duration of their story, one of the key elements they must incorporate into their word play is: characters we can relate to and care about. There are several film categories around; action, drama, comedy and documentary are to name but a few with the number of these increasing. It seems that a month doesn’t go by without a new genre appearing. This can often get a bit confusing as you don’t know what to expect from these types of films. Will there be an interesting plot? Are the characters people I want to admire or relate to?
