- Sweetly conquering your soul -
Born in Royal Lemington Spa and based in London, Amy Crowther is one of those talents that sweetly but steadily cling to your mind.
A musician (piano) singer and songwriter, she is just starting in her professional musical career and is already raising great interest, not only in the music industry but also in the film industry.
Not one but two of her songs, 'Waiting 4 U' and 'Leave it all behind', co-written with Dan The Automator, were selected to form part of the soundtrack of the multi award-winning independent comedy film "Left / Right", written and directed by the Wolfe brothers and starred by Matthew Wolfe (US).
Her demo album, has certainly captured the interest of this international team, with jewels of great sentimental depth such as “Until” or “Crawling” and with pieces of clever and simple melodic beauty such as “Time” and “On and on”.
Amy likes of small intimate gatherings, where her music inundates with sweetness and emotion the senses of those who are attending. And like that, she conquers unexpectedly.
Our only fear is that, these small venues, may become a thing of the past pretty soon.
Thank you for sharing your time with us today, Amy, we really appreciate it, especially because we know that you are gigging at the moment.
MDM: Amy, we have been enchanted by your art but we know nothing of your personal background. When did you start taking piano lessons, do you come from a family with a musical background or are you the “oddly artistic” one?
AMY CROWTHER: My grandfather was very musical, he pretty much played any instrument he could - accordion, harmonica, piano, the spoons! He definitely inspired my interest in music. He couldn't read a note of music but could play most songs by ear and began teaching me the basics, chopsticks.. etc. He gave me his piano and I began taking lessons aged around 7.
MDM: Do you take a methodical approach to writing, meaning, do you have any favourite spots and moments of the day when you feel more inclined to it or do you write in inspiration surges?
AMY CROWTHER: I just write when I can, before/after work, on my bike ride home, in the middle of night...whenever I'm feeling inspired really! I'm constantly writing lyrics and words. I'll sit down at my keyboard, start messing around with chords and somehow they come together in the form of a song. |
MDM: Who would you say are your main influences in music?
AMY CROWTHER: Joan Baez is definitely a big influence in terms of her voice and the purity to it.
Plus loads of others..Mike Patton, Bat for lashes, Dido, James Blunt, Radiohead, Coldplay, The Streets and lots of old school hip hop. My favourite album of all time is 808's and heartbreak by Kanye West a.m.a.z.i.n.g.
But right now it's all about Darwin Deez, I love everything about him!
MDM: Is your material biographical, inspired in other people’s experiences, or totally imagined?
AMY CROWTHER: Generally all my songs are written from personal experience. Either directly about me, or someone close to me. I'm very self-indulgent.
MDM: Your music is intimate and your song writing draws mainly from interpersonal relationship situations, but if you had to pick a social subject, that you would like to have your say on, through your music, which would that be and why?
AMY CROWTHER: I'd love to write a political activist type song in the vein of Joan Baez...Bob Dylan. I like how a song can represent a moment in time/history. I have lots of inspiration and ideas so one day maybe.
MDM: You must be really excited to hear how well is the Wolfe brother’s film, “Left/Right”, doing in so many film festivals. How did you come about this project? Who offered you to participate in its soundtrack?
AMY CROWTHER: Yes very excited, it feels good! Two of the songs that are featured were co-written with producer Dan the Automator who I worked with. The film was made by a friend of his who chose the songs for the soundtrack.
MDM: In your opinion, is the internet a threat or an advantage for upcoming artists?
AMY CROWTHER: I think the advantages definitely outweigh the negatives. For me it's all about creating exposure and getting my music heard and the internet creates a very easily accessible format.. with Myspace, Youtube etc.

There is obviously the massive issue of illegal downloading and the potential of never earning any money but I guess it's more about looking at new ways to work it through, like live touring, merchandise, syncs etc. I do it all for the love obviously.
MDM: Where can people see you live in the next few days, and where can they get your songs at the moment?
AMY CROWTHER: I have a couple of London gigs coming up - 18th August at The Silver Bullet in Finsbury Park, 23rd August at the Hope & Anchor in Islington.. I'm currently working on my first EP which I hope will be available to buy at the end of the year so keep an eye out for it!
MDM: We will and we wish you the very best in a career that we know is taking off onto a great start, and have a great summer!
