There are so many questions surrounding the Horoscope… How did the Horoscope begin? Why do we have an imperious need to know our future? What does astrology have to do with religion?
Lets’ begin with a definition of the word Horoscope:
1. the prediction of a person’s future based on the positions of the planets, sun and moon at the time of birth
2. a diagram showing the positions of the planets, sun and moon at a particular time and place, `Horoscope’ comes via Latin from the Greek hōroskopos, meaning `hour observer’ or `time observer’, referring to the time of a person’s birth. Greek hōra hour + skopas observer.
How valid is a Horoscope reading? What can a Horoscope tell about your personality? Should we consult the Horoscope to guide us in troubled times? Should marriages be decided upon based on Horoscope matching?
You can be a believer, a non-believer or a skeptic about astrology. Astrology combines religion and scientific astronomy, and believes that all events in the cosmos and earth are interconnected by a mystical bond. Magic is an important part of astrology in the same way that faith is an essential part in any religion.
Astrology is a polytheistic discipline; however it is widely accepted by followers of monotheistic religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It is probably the greatest global phenomenon in the history of humanity.
The origins of astrology are found firstly in the Mesopotamian region (Babylonian and Sumerian culture. The earliest omen interpretation is “Enuma Anu Enlil”, an ancient tablet that describes various astronomical omens and their application to national and political affairs).

The Mesopotamian star-Gods were adopted by other cultures, but their main characteristics remained. So during the Greek era “Nergal” became “Ares,” and in the Roman era “Ares” became “Mars (planet –god of war and death) “Ishtar” became “Aphrodite,” then “Venus” ( goddess of love and of horticulture) “Marduk” became “Zeus” and then “Jupiter". These planet-gods were kept in European religious history, right up to now.
The term zodiac derives from Latin zōdiacus, and literally means a “circle of animals”. The first twelve-part division zodiac is an inscription on cuneiform writing. (A cuneiform writing is the earliest known writing system, invented by the Sumerian civilization).
Sir Isaac Newton had an interesting theory in which the zodiac signs are based on the Greek Myth Jason and the Argonauts and The Quest for the Golden Fleece. Aries refers to the Golden Fleece, Leo refers to Hercules, Gemini refers to the twins Castor and Polux, and Virgo refers to the priestess, guardian of the temple, and so on...

But what about astrology and religion? Astrology was the foundation of all the ancient faiths: the Druids and the Norse gods… Astrology was also at the heart of the Mayan, Aztec and Inca religions in the Americas with the Sun as the supreme God. The cult of the sun is evident in the Christian cross. The Sun Cross features a circle around a cross, also known as a Pagan Cross, Solar Cross, Wheel Cross or Odin's Cross …. (The four divisions represent the four seasons and marked by the solstices).
There are endless similarities between the Egyptian god Horus (around 3000 BC) and Jesus, being both representations of the sun.
For example, the birth sequence is completely astrological. The star in the east is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, which, on December 24th, aligns with the 3 brightest stars in Orion's Belt. These three bright stars in Orion's belt are called today what they were called in ancient times: The Three Kings. The Three Kings and the brightest star, Sirius, all point to the place of the sunrise on December 25th. This is why the Three Kings "follow" the star in the east, in order to locate the sunrise.
The Zodiac has a very important part in occidental astrology. The zodiac is also important in other cultures but their zodiac symbols are different. For example, the twelve European Zodiac Signs are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces; and the twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar.
Astrology re-emerged in the twentieth century in connection with the esoteric and with psychology. Astrology made the strongest comeback in all its history after World War I, when British astrologer R.H. Naylor invented the daily newspaper astrology column.
The question of why people believe in astrology is more interesting than the details of the horoscope. So in one hand we have the planet-gods guiding our future, and in the other, faith and belief in the divine intervention... Is astrology cheating? Let’s say that Astrology is somewhere between religion and psychotherapy. Often, astrologists are accused of superstitiously interpreting astronomy. Some non-believers say that Astrology is a pseudoscience, a folk belief based on ancient mythology, and not a real science. However, since the curiosity of human kind to know what the future brings, the demand for our daily Horoscope results will stay and while some of us religiously read it (almost every day) there is a new question to answer:
Will they ever get it right?
