AHAB'S WIFE
BY
SENA JETER NASLUND
Ahab's Wife Sena Jeter Naslund

EXCERPT:

Captain Ahab was neither my first husband nor my last. Yet, looking
up--into the clouds--I conjure him there: his gray-white hair; his gathered brow; and the zaggy mark;
I saw it when lying with him by candlelight and, also, taking our bliss on the sunny moor among curly-cup gumweed and lamb's ear. I see a zaggy shadow in the rifting clouds.

That mark started like lightning at Ahab's temple and ran not all the
way to his heel (as some thought)
but ended at Ahab's heart.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Kentucky Poet Laureate during 2005–2006, Naslund is currently Writer in Residence and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Louisville, Program Director of the Spalding University brief-residency Master of Fine Arts in Writing, and editor of Spalding's Fleur-de-Lis Press and The Louisville Review, which she founded in 1976. She has also taught at the University of Montana, Indiana University (Bloomington), Vermont College, and the University of Montevallo, where she held the Paschal P. Vacca Chair of Liberal Arts with her husband John C. Morrison, a theoretical atomic physicist and coauthor
of Many-Body Electron Theory. Sena Jeter Naslund was also Visiting Eminent Scholar at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

PARALLEL WORLDS
BY
MICHIO KAKU
Paralell Worlds Michio Kaku

EXCERPT:

When I was a child, I had a personal conflict over my beliefs. My parents were raised in the Buddhist tradition. But I attended Sunday school every week, where I loved hearing the biblical stories about whales, arks, pillars of salt, ribs, and apples.
I was fascinated by these Old Testament parables, which were my favorite part of Sunday school. It seemed to me that the parables
about great floods, burning bushes, and parting waters were so much more exciting than Buddhist
chanting and meditation.

In fact, these ancient tales of
heroism and tragedy vividly
illustrated deep moral and ethical lessons which have stayed with me
all my life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Kaku currently holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics and a joint appointment at City College of New York, and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he has lectured for more than 30 years. Presently, he is engaged in defining the "Theory of Everything", which seeks to unify the four fundamental forces of the universe: the strong force, the weak force, gravity and electromagnetism. He was a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and New York University. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He is listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and American Men and Women of Science.

Michio Kaku has written a large range of science books.

THE HOST
BY
STEPHENIE MEYER
The Host Stephenie Meyer

EXCERPT:

I knew it would begin with the end, and the end would look like death
to these eyes. I had been warned.

Not these eyes. My eyes. Mine. This was me now. The language I found myself using was odd, but it made sense. Choppy, boxy, blind, and
linear. Impossibly crippled in comparison to many I’d used, yet
still it managed to find fluidity and expression. Sometimes beauty.
My language now. My native tongue.
