Students at CMS and their Special Fx Applications

Cinema Makeup School leads the world in cutting edge technology instruction in regards to all things make-up.

Located in the heart of make-up’s natural environment, Los Angeles, CMS offers incredible opportunities when it comes to instruction, networking and job support. Whether it be make-up for fashion or film, music videos or commercials, print or special make-up FX, CMS has a training program devoted to the subject.

Established in 1993, CMS has worked its way to the top in reputation for make-up training worldwide.

Headed by Director of Education, Leonard Engelman, the Governor of Make-up of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, CMS brings to the classroom some of the very best working professional makeup artists as mentors and instructors, replacing the apprenticeship of old Hollywood.

Students do not learn from fresh graduates of the school, but seasoned, recognised and skilled working make-up artists with years of artistic make-up experience.

They offer classes and courses from 1 week to 19 weeks. Because of the high level of quality of staff and instructors, CMS is able to teach classes with such subjects as Digital FX Makeup Design, Airbrushing (beauty and FX), Silicone Prosthetics, Blood Work, Hairstyling and many other areas of necessary instruction for today’s high definition world.

Student’s creativity and individuality are stressed during the programs. You are led to the limit and then taught to break free into new realms of makeup design and colors never before considered.

Due to their reputation with the industry, CMS is contacted daily by photographers, directors and production facilities looking for competent make-up artists to help their projects shine. Students are encouraged to work in the evenings and weekends, and taking advantage of their strong job support, graduates receive job updates daily, gaining valuable networking, portfolio and work experience.

Graduates of CMS’ programs have gone on to work with some of the most successful models, photographers, entertainers and directors in the world.

The school even broadcasts winning make-up of its students to the world via the competition pages, allowing potential employers to view their quality of work.

Students also take advantage of Los Angeles’ two Fashion Weeks, Fall and Spring, and work on multiple internationally recognised fashion shows and events, learning how to work as a team and network with some of the world’s top designers and models.

Below, you can find a link accessing the school's YouTube Channel.
This link in particular leads to a video clip showing Lee Joyner (“Godzilla”, “Mimic”, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", “Stargate SG1”), working along with graduate Tomo Hayashi, apply a silicone gel filled appliance (GFA), encapsulated in plastic cap material, on actor Perry Shields for Monsterpalooza 2009 in Burbank, California.

Perry was performing as Jack Pierce, legendary makeup artist who created such iconic horror makeups as Frankenstein (Boris Karloff), The Mummy (Boris Karloff), The Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.), and worked on classic films such as Dracula and The Invisible Man.

This is an example of the cutting edge technology that make-up students travel from around the world to learn at CMS (Cinema Make-up School) in Los Angeles, California.
