ALESSANDRO LUPI
Italy, Germany
“Fluorescent Densities”
Alessandro Lupi, born in Genoa (Italy), lives and works between Genoa and Berlin.
His research on light and space started in 1997, a research that gave birth to his famous “Fluorescent Densities”, made of polyamide threads painted one by one with fluorescent and/or photo luminescent paint.
The subjects of this type of pieces are often three-dimensional bodies, which relate with space in a kinetic or static way and whose world revolve around unexpected opposite situations, like exterior-interior, freedom-prison or life-death without favoring any of them hierarchically.
Innovative and ultimately unique, Lupi renders his work with a meticulous technique, which coupled with the drive of his genius, allows him to eerily endow raw dead materials with life stories.
His studies in the behavior of light and shadow have also provided him with the extensive knowledge to translate his vision of making dead nature elements turn alive in the shadows, as his “Albero” showed at the Freeshout Festival in Prato, Italy.
Both is solo and group shows have taken him all over the world, from Italy to Germany, from Russia to Spain, surprising, shocking and inspiring audiences from all walks of life.

1. MDM_ Your Fluorescent Densities are some of the most original, and more full of life, works of sculpture that can be seen in art today. What is it that leads you to study the development of this technique? What inspired you to specialize in this particular field?
1. ALESSANDRO_ While studying at the Academy of Fine Arts painting really bored me but I quite liked drawing instead. I think originality lies in how we view the world as children, so I revisited an idea I had at age 10: Inventing a bulb that produced darkness. This led me to the experimentation with many materials and I focused on working with light, space and their opposites, inventing new techniques and evolving in terms of my creative pursuits. I think the whole drawing process helped me a lot.
Fluorescent Densities were born almost by accident. Working with darkness, I spilt some colours on some threads. I immediately noticed the effect and started to use threads in the space to generate forms. At first slowly crossing them, but I am still developing the technique.
2. MDM_ What are the most frequent reactions that you can observe from the people attending your shows?
2. ALESSANDRO_ One of the things I like the most is precisely that, observing the different reactions among the public. Naturally it much depends on the type of work and how I installed it. There are those who focus on the types of the material I use, others who focus in the poetic, or simply those who find it thrilling or disturbing.
A peculiarity of the public is that when looking at the work, they reconstruct the missing parts, imagining space details that are part of the visual memory.
In fact, space facilitates this type of vision.
3. MDM_ A frequent theme in your art is the inherent duality of the world we live in, but what is it exactly that you would like the observer to feel or think about, through your own personal re-creation of this duality?
3. ALESSANDRO_ In many of my works I try to create a coexistence of opposites, for example, indoor-outdoor, life-death, past / future. Some people just feel one of these things, and other people perceive both.
I consider the concept of duality to be a very important one. The coexistence of completely opposite things generates energy and also tension in the subconscious.

4. MDM_ Another fantastic and original example of your extensive knowledge in the field of the behavior of light and shadows is offered by your construction of still life that re-lives in the shadows. ¿What inspire you to construct “Albero”?
4. ALESSANDRO_ Albero is a work that I wanted to do for years, very complex and which has matured through many experiments. Surely it is a piece about time and space, which has slowly delineated itself into a clear concept.
In it I like the different phases in which the viewer realises that something is not quite normal, especially in the beginning, when they realise that the shadow of the tree has got leaves but the tree itself has not got any.
5. MDM_ Where can the public see these shows at the moment?
5. ALESSANDRO_ You can currently see them in Havana, at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. As for the next exhibitions, all details will be posted on my website as soon as they are finalised.
6. MDM_ In your opinion, it is becoming harder to make a living from the arts or on the contrary, do you feel that art is becoming understood more and more as another vital component of the human intellectual and emotional development?
6. ALESSANDRO_ For me art is something that comes from passion but which also requires professionalism. I believe that art is fundamental to the development of thinking in general.
7. MDM_ What projects are you currently working on?
7. ALESSANDRO_ On September the 2nd, opens the House of Literature at UNESCO's World Book Capital. I will be installing a sculpture of large proportions in this space.
Also I'm working on a major solo exhibition for 2011 which is very eclectic and experimental. I have been living in Berlin for a year and a half now and I am experiencing with a lot of new ideas. Some are based on natural light, while others are about time and space. I am working with physicists to investigate on new fields of perception.
Alessandro, thank you again for your time; may your new projects bring you much satisfaction and success.
