"
Travelling high with Skye"

Once upon a time there was a creative force whose voice had the gift to take your soul to places beyond the depths of your own mind…

Born in East London, singer-songwriter Shirley Klarise Yonavive Edwards shortened her name to reflect her true nature: Skye.

In 1994 Skye met the Godfrey brothers and together formed the innovative band Morcheeba.

Morcheeba, by mixing trip hop with rock, rhythm and blues and pop, with Skye as leading singer, taught our spirit how to travel beyond the sea waves, dance blindfolded and, above all, be ourselves.

However, Skye had some teachings of her own and while the Godfrey brothers dove deep into experimenting with sound mastery, she gave us a Love Show, told us to Stop Complaining and let us feel her power by conquering Monsters and Demons and hence gaining our hearts forever.

THE MDM * CONTACT

1. MDM_ At what point in her life did Skye decide that she had been born to write and interpret music?

1. SKYE_ I don't think I've ever decided that I was born to write and interpret music, it just kinda happened. I absolutely love what I do. You won't find me moaning about travelling and doing shows. I get to sing on stage, get dressed up in fancy clothes and travel around the world. And, if people buy the album (instead of downloading it for free) I get paid for it too. Talking of clothes, all of the dresses that I'm wearing for the Morcheeba tour, I have made myself.

2. MDM_ Wow, they are gorgeous. You have many great talents! Skye, what genre in music would you say that your soul most resonates with?

2. SKYE_ It's hard to choose one genre. I love old jazz singers like Billy Holiday and Frank Sinatra, equally love Shirley Bassey and John Martyn. For me it's more about the singer, their voice and their interpretation of a song that resonates with me.

3. MDM_ You met the Godfrey brothers at a party, back in 1994. This is a question that we like to ask here at Wonderlance, do you believe in luck and destiny, or are you more inclined to think that we create these?

3. SKYE_ I think it's a bit of both. I like to image there are a few paths that we can choose. I like to think that if you put positive vibes out there positive things will happen.

4. MDM_ Who Can You Trust? and Big Calm are Morcheeba´s most popular albums. Could you anticipate, especially while in the making of the first album, that Morcheeba would become the success it became? What were your feelings in the process of making these albums?

4. SKYE_
When we were making the first Morcheeba album, Paul and Ross said that we were gonna be a studio band. I was so shy, the thought of singing in front of an audience.  They obviously lied! haha. When I stop and think, I am blown away by the success we've had. It wasn't over night mind you.

5. MDM_ Your debut solo album, Mind How You Go was released on 2006, and the first single Love Show was a hit that later featured on a third season episode of Grey's Anatomy called Great Expectations. Has it been any movie or series that you think one of your songs would have been perfect for and if so which movie/series and which song?

5. SKYE_
I can hear my song Monsters Demons in any one of the Vampire series that are out now. I would love to write and sing a song for the next Bond movie, that would be amazing!

6. MDM_ In What's Wrong With Me? from Mind How You Go you talk about issues like poverty, failing legislation, the powers at play…You have also sung on two charity collaborations, Perfect Day 1997 (in aid of Children in Need) and Band Aid 20, in 2004, (in aid of famine relief in Sudan, Africa). Do you think that as a society, here in the occidental countries, we are starting to wake up to the belief that we can change things for the common good or, on the contrary, we are distancing ourselves more from the world´s most pressing issues in search of individual survival and instant gratification?

6. SKYE_
I think there are some that do believe we can make a difference. We give money to charities that send aid to the developing countries. It is easy to loose faith that it can change though. Especially when you start digging deeper and read how the people in power are greedy and corrupted.

7. MDM_ As a mother, which would you say is the biggest challenge of raising a child in today´s world?

7. SKYE_ I'm a mother of three, two boys and a girl. The biggest challenge for me personally, is being able to let them go. I want to protect them, keep them sweet innocent babies! I have to let them make their own mistakes and learn from them. It's especially hard watching my 12 year daughter grow up so quickly. She likes make up and has a 'boyfriend'. I do think about how I present my self in photo's and interviews etc. Because I know my kids will see it. Music videos are so sexual these days, girls are half naked, it's no wonder that kids grow up so quickly! Ooh I feel like a right mum!

8.
MDM_ Your cover of Feel Good Inc by the Gorillaz makes this tremendous hit of the band take on a new completely different dimension. You also covered other hit songs within Marc Collin´s album Hollywood, Mon Amour (an album of popular songs featured in movies from the 1980s) like Blondie's "Call Me" and Duran Duran's "A View to a Kill" from the James Bond film.

If you were to make an album with covers, which songs would you include as a must and why?

8. SKYE_
A few people have suggested I do a cover album. Well, you mentioned three songs already that could go on there! I also did a version of Gershwin's Summer Time with Morcheeba. And recently did a version of Solid Air by John Martyn for the John Martyn Tribute Album. It should be out towards the end of the year. I'd also like to do a cover of Justin Timberlake's My Love. I'd slow it down right down and do it acoustically.

9. MDM_
From the soothing I Believe to the re-assuring Almost Killed Me, from the dark tones of Monsters Demons to the warmth sensuality of Maybe to Spain and the tasteful psychedelic riffs of Exhale, your second solo album offers a fantastic repertoire of beautiful “secrets”. Would you say that Keeping Secrets is a portrayal of your own personal evolution, or does it take from other´s experiences too?

9. SKYE_ Mind How You Go was so personal to me, for my second solo album I wanted it to have more stories. I always try to draw from my experiences, but this time the songs are less about me and more outward looking. I really tried to push my self lyrically and melodically.

10. MDM_ It has taken seven years for the fans to see Morcheeba and Skye reunite. Your first live performance together, since 2002 , took place on the last 9th of April at the Switzerland´s Caprice Festival. How did it feel for you that moment?

10. SKYE_
It was magic to be on the stage with Ross again, and in front of an audience that had been longing for this reunion. You could feel such a great energy from the crowd. Good vibes were bouncing from them to us. It was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to doing lots of shows through the summer around Europe. We're also playing at the Big Chill in August and at Camden's Round House October 23rd

11. MDM_ Morcheeba´s new album, with you as leading singer, has just been released, on the 7th of June. What can you anticipate us from Blood like Lemonade

11. SKYE_ Well, Paul has said this is the album we should have made after Big Calm, but I guarantee you that if we had made this album back then, critics would have written 'ah Morcheeba repeat them selves, It's the same.' I know it is a record that Morcheeba fans will love. It's an album that helps you tune in, drop and love. How about that? haha

MDM_ Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to our questions, Skye, you certainly are beautiful inside-out.

Here at Wonderlance we wish you every success, whether going solo or as part of Morcheeba.
